BB Backbone and BBIX Successfully Complete Joint Verification with Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme for 1.6 Tb/s Long-Distance Data Transmission
February 20, 2026
BB Backbone Corp.
BB Backbone Corp. (“BB Backbone”; President, CEO, and CISO: Naoki Yamamoto; Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo) in collaboration with BBIX, Inc.(“BBIX”; President and CEO: Hideyuki Sasaki; Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo) and Ciena Communications Japan G.K (“Ciena”; Representative Executive Officer and President: Anthony Guercio; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), has successfully achieved 1.6 Tbps long-distance transmission using a commercial network.
In this verification, high-capacity transmission was achieved with a bandwidth of 225 GHz using Ciena's WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) transponders in an Alien Wavelength (third-party signal) connectivity configuration.
Going forward, we will advance research to provide services tailored to customer usage patterns.
■Background
Supports Alien Wavelength (AWL) connectivity and has completed connection verification with a wide range of transponders. As communication capacity continues to increase, to enable even higher-capacity transmission, BB Backbone conducted this verification to confirm the practicality of Ciena's new high-capacity WL6e transponders.
■ Overview of the Verification
Using a test configuration (Figure 1) on the B³ Spectrum network connecting data centers in Tokyo and Shirakawa, Fukushima, transmission tests were conducted using the Waveserver platform equipped with Ciena WL6e transponders (Figure 2). These tests simulated actual operations in an environment where adjacent wavelengths were present.
Quality measurements were performed through RFC 2544 testing (Frame Loss and Latency tests) and extended BER (Bit Error Rate) testing. These tests confirmed that there were no issues with transmission quality and that long-distance transmission at 1.6 Tbps per wavelength (1.6Tλ) is feasible. Additionally, waveform analysis using a spectrum analyzer confirmed stable, high-quality transmission with no interference between adjacent wavelengths.

■Future Outlook
BB Backbone will continue to promote user-first development, verification, and service delivery. By leveraging the cost advantages of "B³ Spectrum," the company aims to enable more customers to build efficient and cost-effective networks.
